Hotel roof fire

A roof fire at the Fairmont Southampton Princess brought three fire trucks and 13 fire personnel to the resort yesterday morning.

But workmen were able to put the blaze out before the Fire Department arrived, though not before the flames damaged the roof. The blaze started when workers on the roof were using a propane gas torch, which ignited foam material serving as roof insulation. The alarm was sounded at 8.34 a.m. yesterday. Fire damage was put at $8,000.

Search for boat

An aircraft from the US was last night searching the last known position of a Canadian fishing boat.

The Sea Gypsy, a 45ft fishing boat, last made contact with the owner of the vessel on Thursday. The boat, carrying three people, was on its way to Bermuda from St. John's, Newfoundland. On Thursday it reported to the owner that it was 220 miles north east of Bermuda. An aircraft from Elizabeth City, New Jersey was searching the area, a Harbour Radio spokesperson said. Harbour Radio had previously been unable to make contact with the boat.
