Accountancy moving to world standards

to gain world recognition, especially with moves underway toward the development of international accounting and auditing standards.

This is the view of renowned Canadian chartered accountant Mr. Keith Dalglish.

Mr. Dalglish, newly appointed Chairman of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA) is on the Island along with the organisation's Board of Governors for its annual general meeting and to help the ICAB celebrate its 20th anniversary.

Mr. Dalglish is no stranger to Bermuda, however, having spent his honeymoon here in September, 1958, with his wife, Gail. This dapper gentleman told The Royal Gazette of the role that the CICA provides.

"The CICA is the national governing body for Chartered Accountants in Canada, of which Bermuda is considered a provincial member,'' he said. "It co-ordinates international activities and sets standards for its members. The CICA issues handbooks and dictas for about 55,000 chartered accountants in Canada, and about 500 in Bermuda.'' "CICA has world stature, and because of this, Bermuda inherits it. CICA is a member of The International Federation of Accountants, which has a membership of 107 countries, and Bermuda is a participant,'' Mr. Dalglish observed.

Bermuda participates on an international level, and as world accounting bodies strive to develop a universally-accepted set of accounting and auditing standards, CICA keeps the Bermuda Institute well informed, he said.

"The big thing, now, is to develop international accounting standards, so that someone in New York, for example, can issue financial statements, and they would be recognisable throughout the world,'' he said.

He will present the Convocation Address at the Convocation Luncheon of the ICAB today, and will present certificates to candidates who have successfully passed this year's CA examinations.

After graduating from Trinity College at the University of Toronto in 1952, Mr. Dalglish began his career with accounting firm, Price Waterhouse. He is now senior partner at KPMG Peat Marwick Thorne in Toronto, and his impressive client list includes top Canadian companies such as Maple Leaf Gardens Ltd.

and Rogers Communications.
