Bank signs mile pact for two more years
two-year agreement with the Bermuda Track and Field Association to sponsor the Front Street Mile in 1993 and 1994.
As has been the case since its inception, the event will kick off the International Race Weekend and will take place on Friday, January 15.
It will consist of a series of races in various categories climaxed by the Elite Mile that can be expected to feature a number of top overseas competitors.
Once again a bonus of $10,000 has been put on the table for anyone who breaks the four minute barrier.
Thus far the no one has been able to lay claim to the cash with Briton Steve Cram failing by four-and-a-half seconds in 1991 and Joe Falcon (4:04.2) of the United States missing out earlier this year.
Another major development to evolve concerns the ADT Bermuda Marathon scheduled for January 17, which has undergone adjustments to the two loop course. The start and finish will now be on Front Street and an added feature will be the ADT Half Marathon slated to start simultaneously with the full marathon but taking in only one loop of the course.
Last year a pair of Russians swept to victories in both the men's and women's categories with Sergei Krestyaninov (2:24:55) and Valentina Shateika (2:58:24) capturing top honours.
Meanwhile the ADT 10-K (January 16) has seen no such radical changes and will again start and finish in the region of the National Stadium. Mexican Marcos Baretto (29:23) was the men's winner while Wilma van Onna (33:57) triumphed among the women.
Currently in New York recruiting for the various events is Mile race director Mike Charles and he will be joined by Peter Lever today as they take advantage of the presence of many top athletes at the New York City Marathon.
Entry forms for the three events are available at a number of sports stores and school children can obtain forms for the mile run at their schools.
Trials for the mile will be held at the Saltus Grammar School field on Saturday, December 12, and Sunday, December 13.
