Controversial 'Son of the Soil', Harold Darrell, is running as an Independent candidate for Pembroke Central and could well prove to be an election spoiler for the PLP.

Mr. Darrell is running against current Pembroke Central MP and Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs Wayne Perinchief and UBP candidate Austin Warner.

Despite several attempts by this newspaper to contact him for a this candidate profile, Mr. Darrell did not respond to calls for comment.

According to an article in Mid-Ocean News yesterday, however, Mr. Darrell said he has received good responses while canvassing in constituency 17. He said the residents in the constituency expressed concern about the direction in which the Island is heading.

He claims the residents say they don't want Dr. Brown as the Premier and wonders if that means voters won't vote for the PLP.

The candidate said he has heard the PLP are calling him a traitor, but many members of the party have told him he did the right thing by leaking the BHC dossier to the press.

Mr. Darrell also said in the article the reason he chose to run is that he is dissatisfied with the current Government. He said it is important to give voters the opportunity to express their concerns about the Government.

He said by running as an Independent, he doesn't have a platform because he wouldn't be able to promise to achieve it. He said if elected, he offers integrity and promises never to be compromised or bought and to look out for the residents of Pembroke Central.

The candidate said he chose to run as an Independent because he isn't comfortable with the philosophy of the UBP and doesn't feel the leadership of the PLP represents the labour philosophy.
