Under-19 return to top flight

Bermuda Under-19 have achieved their promotion remit after winning the North American Caribbean Rugby Association Trophy in Trinidad yesterday.

The Under-19 side, who defeated St Vincent and British Virgin Islands earlier this week, lost their final game 14-10 to Turks and Caicos yesterday but had already done enough to finish top of the three-team group.

Bermuda were playing for the Nacra Trophy rather than the Nacra Cup after suffering relegation from the top regional group at last year’s competition.

Donal Moynihan, the team’s coach, said he was proud his players had accomplished their primary goal of promotion.

“We had a fantastic week and the players worked really hard and got their just rewards,” Moynihan said.

“It was a close thing and initially we thought we hadn’t done enough but later we found out that we had won the group and the players felt relieved.

“It’s a case of mission accomplished and we’re back where we want to be with the big boys of Nacra.

“The Nacra Cup is a more prestigious competition and we’re looking forward to being part of it next year.”
