Demanding decency, respect and ‘proper carriage’
June 18, 2014
Dear Sir,
With the intense amount of political drama played out in the theatre of war exercises reminiscent of the recent block buster hit Hunger Games from the motion picture association of America, our honourable house is now under siege by a culture of evil.
Perhaps now maybe the time has come to retire the prefix of gate being attached to every boondoggle our legislature seems to find themselves in.
If Bermuda itself were considered an airport there would not be enough gates for us to pass through or stumble over considering our recent conundrums.
When your opponent is down as will happen in political engagement it would do well to show largesse and be magnanimous considering your turn will come, sure as night follows day.
I do agree with MP Walton Brown that our legislators are not the guardians of public morality but surely a commitment to good conduct free of a cavalier attitude of no expectation of a demonstrated example to be the best they can be would be entirely reasonable.
When a code of ministerial conduct is hailed as the holy grail which must never ever be breached with the most punitive of punishment to be levied including banishment, one must ask why morality for our MP’s would be given short shrift?
The honourable house has been hijacked by a cadre of back room sleaze where accusation and unsubstantiated innuendo are the tools of choice. Bermuda’s underbelly and filthy laundry has become centre stage on the floor of the oldest Parliament outside of the UK. We have had to endure the most mean spirited, venomous and vile exchanges in our history.
It is my duty as I see it to remind the guilty parties of this deplorable behaviour that this is a Christian country! The house opens every session with prayer asking God to help them in their deliberations and good governance for our island home.
I believe I speak for all of us when saying we love this country and only want what is best for us collectively.
It is with dismay that we endure half truths and low brow personal attacks replete with making every thing which disgusts us as racially motivated when more times than not that is simply not true.
I demand decency, respect and a high degree of proper carriage from my government and the opposition. I want to know the members of the house do not use illegal substances and eschew the very practice and behaviour!
At this time we have seen the premier resign and the others in cabinet have had resignations being demanded with extreme prejudice.
A vote of no confidence in the government was mooted replete with censure and the denunciation and repudiation of the One Bermuda Alliance administration.
Off with their heads was the most desirable remedy for their detractors. The severely tarnished and compromised Mr Marc Bean does not merit a red card?
I wonder why inquiring minds want to know given the most disgraceful and putrid performance recently. The house needs fumigation of a very poisonous element.
