Huddersfield relying on Wells to kick on from fantastic March

Wells was the Huddersfield supporters' player of the month for March

Nahki Wells’s consistent form has earned the praise of Mark Robins, the Huddersfield Town manager.

The Bermuda striker has notched three goals in his past four appearances and five overall since joining the Sky Bet Championship side from Bradford City, of League One, for a record £1.3?million during the January transfer window.

“He’s been fantastic for us because he loves scoring goals and he loves working hard to try and find space and stretch defences,” Robins said. “It’s really great to see.”

Wells has 20 goals for the season with Bradford and Huddersfield and will be looking to get on the scoresheet for the third consecutive match when his team host Bolton Wanderers at the John Smith’s Stadium today.

The former Dandy Town player’s form reflects an improvement in the team, which Robins wants to see maintained to the end of the season. The manager, who is a former Manchester United striker, believes that Wells is playing a vital role.

“We are looking to put in another good, positive team performance against Bolton to build on those we’ve had in the last couple of games [against Middlesbrough at home and Reading away],” Robins said. ”If we put in the good performances, then, inevitably, decent results will follow.

“It’s not always the case because you are talking about sport, but we are looking to produce positive performances and hopefully get the rewards for those from now to the end of the season.”

Wells, 23, struck his fifth goal for Huddersfield in a 1-1 draw away to Reading last weekend.

A string of Huddersfield players performed admirably during the match, among them goal scorer Wells.

“There were some really good performances and Nahki Wells was another one,” Robins said.

The manager will need Wells to maintain his scoring form, especially with James Vaughan ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.

This week Wells was voted the supporters’ Player of the Month for March, having featured in all of Huddersfield’s seven games, scoring three goals. He also had four assists in the 5-0 drubbing of Barnsley on March 1, Huddersfield’s only win of the month.

Wells’s achievement will be acknowledged when he is presented with a bottle of champagne before today’s match by a lucky fan, whose name was drawn from the membership of the club’s official supporters’ group, the Blue and White Foundation.
