I can learn from Vaughan, says Wells
Nahki Wells, the Huddersfield Town striker, believes he can forge a lethal partnership with James Vaughan — although there are doubts about the former England Under-21 player’s long-term future at the club.
Vaughan, Huddersfield’s leading scorer with 12 goals, returned to training yesterday after recovering from an ankle injury. Wells is expected to initially link up with Martin Paterson as the Sky Bet Championship side’s front pair.
“It it will be great to play alongside [James] and I think the partnership will do well,” Wells told The Royal Gazette. “James is probably the best player in the league when fit.
“James has been playing a long time and has a lot of experience for such a young age. And for a small guy, he brings a big presence, which obviously helps me and the other attackers, so it’s important to get him back.”
Vaughan, 25, paid tribute to Wells on Twitter, the social-networking site, after the Bermudian’s goalscoring debut against Millwall at the weekend.
“Another good win for the lads. Stuck at it and got the 3 points!! That’s all that matters! Congrats @nahkiwells great debut!!” he tweeted.
Twenty-four hours earlier, he had been quick to welcome the club’s record signing on the same forum. “From what I’ve seen, Nahki Wells is a very good player and I’m looking forward to playing with him,” he told his Twitter followers.
Dean Hoyle, the Huddersfield chairman, has confirmed that Vaughan would not be sold this month and hopes he can fire the club towards a Championship play-off push alongside Paterson and new hero Wells. “[Nahki] will link up well with Vaughan and Paterson,” Hoyle told the Huddersfield Examiner.
“They are all out-and-out strikers who know how to put the ball in the back of the net, so we are absolutely delighted for the club and to have Nahki with us for 4½ years.
“Nahki is not James’s replacement, but we have to be realistic as well. With him and Paterson finding their shooting boots, it’s very exciting.
“James is a fantastic striker who will not be leaving in this window. He may leave in the summer or next January, who knows, but we need to be getting strikers through the door.”
Huddersfield paid a club-record sum for Wells’s services believed to be more than £1.3?million. The deal also made Wells Bermuda’s first million-pound footballer, an accolade that he played down.
“You could not have asked for a better start,” the 23-year-old said. “It is flattering that Huddersfield paid such a sizeable fee for me and it hasn’t really sunk in yet.
“I am just happy to have been given the opportunity to play professionally. I am going to try and continue to put Bermuda on the map, set the right example for young players and pave the way for other Bermudian players to strive to be like me, if not better.”
Because Wells could not be registered in time, an emergency loan allowed him to take the field at the St John Smith’s Stadium against Millwall. He officially became a Huddersfield player yesterday.
“There are some big players here and I am going from probably being one of the best players at Bradford to being in a team with players that are probably a lot better than me,” he said. “I just want to continue working hard to try and get to the top. Everyone knows what I bring in terms of goals and hopefully chances will come and I can take them.
“We played with two up front [on Saturday] which is a bit different and sometimes I caught myself in positions which probably are not to my strength. But that’s football and I feel that I dealt with it quite well.”
