Smith fourth in Diamond League meet
Bermuda’s Tyrone Smith said he wanted to make amends for his failure to reach the final at the World Athletics Championships in Russia last week and did exactly that as he placed fourth in the long jump at today’s DN Galan Diamond League meet in Sweden’s Stockholm Stadium.Smith was sitting in third place after the first three rounds of jumps with a then best leap of 7.91 metres in his second attempt after a fault in his opening jump. And while he managed to improve on that leap by hitting the 7.94 mark in his fifth jump, he had already slipped to fourth place where he remained. His best leap was matched by Sweden’s Michel Torneus who finished fifth after only two legal jumps. At the Worlds in Moscow, Smith’s best effort was 7.89 metres.Last night he had jumps of 7.91, 7.82, 7.67, 7.94 and 7.81 in that order after the opening fault. The best leap of the night was recorded by Russia’s Aleksandr Menkov who hit the mark at 8.18 on his fourth jump after an 8.06 at the third attempt. In the end he was not required to use his last two jumps as his 8.18 was not threatened.Finishing second was Godfrey Mokoena of South Africa with a best of 8.06 metres (he passed eight metres on each of his last five jumps) while Spain’s Eusebio Caceres finished third with his 8.00 metres at the third attempt.
