College scouts to watch Island’s all-stars

Bermuda's top young players will be on show at the BSSF All-Star games this weekend

Bermuda’s most talented young footballers will showcase their skills at the annual Bermuda School Sports Federation All-Star games at the North Field, National Sports Centre, tomorrow.

Once again the East and West will battle for the bragging rights, with six matches — senior school girls and boys, middle school boys and girls, and primary school boys and girls — being contested throughout the day.

About 200 boys and girls are expected to be on display, with Irving Romaine, the West senior school boys’ coach, hoping for some entertaining encounters between the Island’s top young players.

He also said several overseas college scouts would be in attendance to run the rule over the players.

“It’s not really about winning and losing, it’s about putting on a good game of football,” the Berkeley Institute teacher said.

“The games will be filmed and players will be able to use the footage for when they try to get college scholarships.

“We’re just hoping for some good games between our best talent.”

Romaine said the high school boys’ matches would feature players with Premier Division experience, including Jahnazae Swan, of Dandy Town, Azende Furbert, of North Village, and PHC’s Deondre Dowling.

“These players are academically sound and most of them have the grades to actually go off to university,” Romaine, who has been coaching at the All-Star games for five years, said.

“There are a lot of talented players in the high school boys’ match who people will recognise from the Premier Division.”

Romaine, a former Bermuda cricket captain, said he was hoping for a bumper turnout for the games.

“It would be nice if people came out and supported players,” he said. “There are games all day and I hope people will hang around for the high school games.

“When I was at school we used to have a banquet and up to 20 coaches would come down to recruit. It’s gone away from that a little, but the BSSF are trying to get back there.

“We really want to make it a showpiece and one of the highlights of the football season.”

In last year’s All-Star games, the West won four of the six games, with the West beating the East in the primary school girls’ match, while the West defeated the East 7-5 in the boys’ game.

In the middle school games, the West girls won 5-2 and the West boys triumphed 2-0. The East finally pulled off a win in the high school girls’ game, with a 7-1 win, while the West boys won 3-1.
