DeCouto riding high after US success

Paul DeCouto (far right) did Bermuda proud in Wisconsin, USA, last weekend when he produced seven podium displays that included three wins.

Expert motorcycle racer Paul DeCouto stamped his authority at last weekend’s AMA sanctioned ASRA and Championship Cup Series (CCS) event at Road America in Wisconsin. The Bermudian was at his absolute best, posting seven podium finishes that included three victories.Competing with his modified Cycle Care Limited GSXR 1000cc and 750cc bikes, DeCouto won two races in the Expert Heavyweight Supersport and also claimed the chequered flag in the Expert Formula 40 race.He also finished runner-up in two races in the Expert Unlimited Superbike division and had another second in the Expert Unlimited GP.DeCouto, 43, again stood on the podium after placing third in the Expert ASRA Pro Superstock event to take over top spot in the 2013 National ASRA Pro Superstock Series.“It is quite an exhilarating feeling to be the leader in the ASRA Pro Superstock Series as it is the most coveted position in club level racing to be at,” DeCouto told The Royal Gazette. “It is also a bit unnerving as I am now the target, the one to catch. As fellow racers say, ‘you have a big X on your back’.”DeCouto currently holds a 26 point lead over second placed rider Timothy Bemisderfer of the USA in the ASRA Pro Superstock Series.Overall, the local racer gave last weekend’s experience in Wisconsin the proverbial thumbs-up.“The event was very successful with over 800 participants,” added DeCouto.DeCouto said weather conditions were ideal for racing.“The weather was warm and sunny compared to last year as it was rainy, freezing cold and miserable.”Making DeCouto’s feat all the more remarkable was the fact he achieved it on a Road America racetrack that puts racers’ skills to the ultimate test.“The track is very challenging,” the father of one said. “It’s a high speed course over four miles with hard breaking and elevation changes.”Last year saw the Cycle Care co-owner produce several podium displays on the CCS en route to being crowned 2012 Southeast Regional Champion in the Expert Pirelli GTO and Expert Unlimited Classes.
