Burglar jailed for three years

A “repeat offender” with a history of mental illness and addiction was jailed for three years.Tracyston Mallory, 26, of Boundary Crescent, Devonshire, admitted stealing liquor and jewellery totalling $4,770, from Devonshire homes.The thefts occurred at two residences on Vesey Street and Valley Heights on January 25 and February 4 respectively.He was caught on February 5 after returning to the Vesey Street address and attempting to break in.Mr Warner noted Mallory’s previous convictions for break-ins from 2007, 2008 and 2009.“Government is in the process of actively pursuing a mental health court,” said Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner. “But that’s going to take some time to come to fruition — and that still leaves us the question of where we’re going to put them.”Mental health issues and addiction “clearly is the cause of his behaviour”, Mr Warner added.“Until we have got somewhere to give treatment, he will have to go to prison,” he said.Mallory was jailed for three years for the break-ins and one year for the attempted break-in. The sentences are to run concurrently and will be followed by three years’ probation.
