OBA has ‘no new ideas’

PLP MP Wayne Furbert

Government plans for entrepreneurs to prosper are more a case of “business as usual” rather than business development, according to the Opposition.During the four hours set aside for discussion of the budget for the Ministry of Economic Development, Progressive Labour Party members repeatedly criticised Government for a lack of new ideas — and for failing to credit the work of the previous administration.During his opening presentation in the House of Assembly last night, Minister Grant Gibbons said the department’s priorities were to increase confidence for existing businesses, and to encourage new businesses to set up shop in Bermuda. The One Bermuda Alliance member also said that the Department of Telecommunications still hopes to reach next month’s deadline to utilise its orbital slot, providing another source of revenue for Government. But while the Minister methodically explained how each dollar and cent will be spent, the Opposition focused on what it saw as a failed election promise by the new Government.Shadow Minister Glenn Blakeney said Government’s task would have been easier “had you given some credence to some of the things we were trying to do”.He said Government could do more to help the Economic Empowerment Zone initiative thrive.“What, if any, are the targets? What are you looking at with regard to potential growth with regard to business proposals you have already received or requests?”Government needed to be more proactive and “think outside the box” in order to move plans forward according to Mr Blakeney.Shadow Tourism Minister Wayne Furbert also took aim at the Government, saying: “I have to ask myself, what has this Government introduced in business development?“They came in with this great fanfare and promises that they had all the answers. The Minister, Grant Gibbons, has presented his budget and I was waiting with bated breath, yet what new ideas do they have?”Mr Furbert said that the new administration had inherited a solid foundation for business development and had done nothing more than “tweaking”.“They’re like a new chef who comes in and wants to change the coffee,” he said.“To come here today and tell the country that there’s nothing new under the sun — I just find it disheartening because they had all the answers. “Accusing Government of “cut-and-pasting”, Mr Furbert added: “These ideas came from the PLP Government — I appreciate that you saw the good ideas from this side and that the fruit of our labour will come to fruition.”Opposition leader Marc Bean also accused the OBA Government of trying to take credit for his party’s work.“What struck me was the political pathology that lies within the OBA Government,” Mr Bean said.“When it’s convenient, they take full credit for things that they really had nothing to do with.”Mr Bean also accused Dr Gibbons of being a “revisionist of history” who said things “that have no basis in fact” — and that there was “an intellectual cancer going on in this House”.Regarding discussion of the satellite slot, the Opposition leader said the Minister had suggested the delays in forward progress were the fault of the PLP, and he has been left “scrambling”.“I would encourage the minister to continue to scramble in a very positive way, although I am not confident in us being able to do it due to time constraints only,” Mr Bean said.“It’s regretful on our side. Don’t try to allude that we are all bad and you are all good and you are the knight in shining armour coming to save the day.”Closing the debate, Dr Gibbons said: “They know how to talk. The problem we inherited is that they didn’t execute.”
