Jonte scores in Senior Cup win
Jonte Smith was on target in Crawley Town’s win over County League Newhaven in the third round of the Sussex Senior Cup on Wednesday night.The Bermudian striker scored the game’s only goal in the 33rd minute when he followed up on his own rebound after his initial effort was parried away by the ‘keeper.It was Smith’s first goal since returning to the Reds following a fruitful three-month loan spell with Ryman League side Metropolitan Police where he scored 24 goals in 19 appearances.The 18-year old footballer also had a goal ruled offside in the Red’s hard fought win against Newhaven that saw them progress to the quarter-final of the Sussex Senior Cup.The Reds will take on former Southern League rivals Hastings United in the last eight at the Pilot Field on a date yet to be confirmed.Wednesday’s cup tie at Fort Road was played in frigid conditions on a bobbly pitch.Smith, who played the entire 90 minutes in the Reds Sussex Senior Cup conquest of Newhaven, made his first team debut for Crawley in December of last year in a 3-0 away loss against Bournemouth.
