St Mary’s Church in Warwick donated $1,300 to help needy families pay their electricity bills. The funds will be distributed in $50 vouchers, as part of Government’s Financial Assistance Programme.“We see a constant stream of people looking for help with food, accommodation, hospital bills and utility bills,” said Archdeacon Andrew Doughty as he presented the vouchers to Financial Assistance director Dianna Taylor. “Obviously, there’s only so much we can do, but every Christmas we pick a special charity to support.“In 2011, we supported Teen Services and collected items like diapers and things babies need. My wife Rosie came up with this year’s theme, Let There Be Light.”He said a lot of families are having a hard time paying their electrical bills through no fault of their own.“They are just ordinary families struggling,” he said.Members of the congregation donated to the endeavour.“I want to thank the people who supported it,” said Rev Doughty. “They put the ordinary money in the collection and then gave extra for this.”The vouchers will be given to anyone on the Island in need. For information about Financial Assistance call 297-7600 or 295-5151 ext 4314.
