Another world?

It has always been a particular bugbear of this newspaper’s — bad manners.Do we really need to hear your cell phone conversation? Do we really need — or want — to hear your choice of music slowly deafening us as your car draws closer? We now have to wait an inordinate amount of time before someone lets a car into the traffic from a side road (so much like big city behaviour).Who now routinely stands to give up your place on the crowded bus? How many routinely say ‘good morning’, ‘good afternoon’ and ‘good night’ — or do you fix your eyes to the pavement to avoid such niceties? How many of us can, hands on heart, say they know the names of their neighbours — what they do for a living and what their children are called. How many of us now consider ourselves to be good neighbours? You may respond that times have moved on, that the views of this newspaper (at least in this respect) are archaic and it should not pine for a return to a bygone era, that this is the price of progress.Maybe soon people will be saying ‘Bermuda used to be another world….’* What do you think? E-mail acting Editor Jeremy Deacon with your thoughts — jdeacon@royalgazette.bm
