Nahki Wells has hailed Bradford City’s stunning upset of Premier side Wigan Athletic as the highlight of his blossoming professional football career.League One side City prevailed 4-2 in a thrilling penalty shoot-out at JB Stadium on Tuesday night to reach the quarter-finals of the English League Cup for the first time in more than two decades.Wells played a key role in his team’s famous win, tormenting the Latics defence in the first-half and having a 30-yard blast saved by ‘keeper Al Habsi before he was substituted.“We were on top of the world and were all buzzing and embracing after the game,” Wells told The Royal Gazette. “It’s one of those moments in a career that’s a highlight, especially mine.“It’s certainly the highlight of my career. Everyone was buzzing and it was a great atmosphere in the dressing room afterwards.“The gaffer (Phil Parkinson) gave us high praises for what we accomplished and it’s not easy to go out there and beat a side that play in the Premier League week in and week out for a cup they could realistically win.“They (Wigan) gave it their all and threw on the big guns later but didn’t reap the reward and we ended up winning. It was a great achievement and a few of their players came in the dressing room to congratulate us on how well we done. But you can only imagine what the feeling was like beating a Premier side.”Wells admitted to be nervous during the penalty shoot-out.“The penalty shoot-out was very nerve-wracking,” he said “It was unreal and the atmosphere from our fans and how well we did was amazing.“We scored all of our penalties and our keeper (Matt Duke) made a few saves and when he made that final save you can only imagine that feeling everyone had. It was like winning a million dollars and we were all so happy.”Wells was replaced by Alan Connell in the 65th minute after experiencing discomfort in a hamstring.“I felt my hamstring a bit and the gaffer pulled me,” the former Dandy Town player said. “He didn’t want to take any risks.“I was gutted but those things happen in football. I got it assessed and it’s no problem.”As for his contribution to City’s stunning win, Wells said: “I put in a good shift and did the best I could and caused some problems.“Obviously I would’ve liked to have played 90 plus minutes and been involved in the penalty shoot-out. But unfortunately that didn’t happen.”The last time Bradford beat a Premier side was in 1995 when they knocked past European Champions Nottingham Forrest out of the League Cup.The Bantams will face Northampton in the FA Cup on Saturday at Sixfields Stadium.
