City theatre to be named after Earl Cameron
Veteran actor Bermudian Earl Cameron is to have the City Hall Theatre named after him, in recognition of his groundbreaking career on screen and stage.A ceremony could be held early next month, depending on Mr Cameron’s availability.According to a City spokeswoman, the decision was made by the new Hamilton administration to honour his long and distinguished career.Mr Cameron, originally of Pembroke, is not only considered the Island’s top actor, but is also renowned as one of the first black actors to star in a film — 1951’s ‘Pool of London’.After leaving the Island with the Merchant Navy, he started out on the London stage in 1942. In interviews Mr Cameron attributed landing the role to sheer luck.In 2009, he was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). The 95-year-old currently resides in the UK.
