Wells back on road to full recovery
Nahki Wells showed further signs that he is making a full recovery from a hip injury in Bradford City’s 2-0 away win against struggling Oxford United at the weekend. The Bermudian striker played 70 minutes of the match and scored his team’s second goal to put the result further beyond the hosts’ reach.Wells said he was delighted to have scored again.“I was glad to get on the scoresheet again,” he told The Royal Gazette. “It’s always good to score goals especially when you win which is like a double bonus.”Wells’ goal in his last outing was his first since having scans for a recurring hip injury.“I played 70 minutes on Saturday and felt pretty good and hopefully it will continue to get better,” he said. “I think my fitness has come a long way.”The ex-Dandy Town player has now scored three goals in seven appearances for the high-flying Bantams this term.Last season saw Wells bag 12 goals in his debut campaign with Bradford, including a memorable hat-trick against Northampton Town. This year he has set himself a target of 20-plus goals which he is confident of achieving.“I have three goals this season and I’m still very confident of getting my target,” the City striker said. “I know it won’t be easy but I’m sure I have what is required to hit that mark.“If I can hit that mark I can possibly get the Golden Boot. It won’t be easy, but I will try my best.”After barely surviving in the English League Two last season, City are off to their best start in more than half a century. The club are currently fourth in the league standings.“We are off to the best start in the club’s history in 55 years so it’s a good achievement,” Wells said. “But we can’t get head over heels because there’s still 38 games to go and we just need to continue getting positive results against the opponents that are put in front of us.”Wells said getting a first win on the road under the belt against Oxford at the weekend was a major psychological boost for the team.“The first away win was very important for us,” he added. “We have had that above our heads for quite some time; going and going without that first important away win.“I’m very glad to have gotten it and now we can try and win as many home games and manage the away games much better. We now have that winning feeling so we know what it takes to pick up points on the road.”City will face Burton today in the Capital One Cup at Coral Windows Stadium.
