Not so fictional

March 31, 2012Dear Sir,I found this mystery novel by accident. It looked interesting as Bermuda, Devil’s Island, was mentioned in the description. The novel is by David Manual and called ‘A Matter of Time’ published 2002. It is a novel set mainly in Bermuda. It is in my opinion the mostly accurate social description of Bermuda today in 2012 ten years later. I feel the author has honed in and recognised our Bermuda issues better than we have been able. One question from an arriving visitor to his taxi driver in the story was ‘So declining tourism is your biggest problem? The Bermuda taxi driver answered ‘No, it is drugs’.I have only finished half of this novel but one passage rocked me in my shoes. A young teen was in a church reading the bulletin board and looked like he wanted to talk about an issue with his pastor but left the church without talking to his minister. The visitor went to the notice board and found the notice he believed that young teen was reading. It read:“YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENTNOT WHERE DRUGS (my addition here where GUNS} ARE CONCERNEDIF YOU KNOW SOMETHINGYOU HAVE TO TELL SOMEONE”This is the message we need to send out loud and clear to our community. I am eager to read about other observations in the novel. This was the major observation to me but there were also many others in the novel. Our community could do to read this ‘fictional’ novel to find some major truths about Bermuda.Give me a day to finish reading this novel and I will gladly pass it on to another reader if they will then pass it on and pay the message forward.I do not know the author nor much about him so I am not promoting the author but just that profound thought.ELLIESt George’s
