Bill would allow one-off shopping day for cruisers Good Friday

Legislation intended to encourage businesses to open their doors on Good Friday has been welcomed by St George’s businesses.The Public Holidays Amendment Bill 2012 would, if approved, exempt St George’s from restrictions on commercial activity on Good Friday, allowing them tend to the visitors on board the Azma Journey.Speaking in response to the bill, Cheryl Hayward-Chew, head of the East End Division of the Chamber of Commerce, said that retailers are excited about the possibility of opening on the holiday.“If the legislation is amended then the cruise ship passengers along with locals in St George’s for the church services and annual procession and crucifixion re-enactment will find many of the retailers open,” she said.
