Hot-shot Wells earn contract extension

Nahki Wells has come a long way in a short period of time at Bradford City. Now he intends to make the most of his stay at Coral Windows Stadium. The Bermuda international, who had his contract at the English League Two side extended at the end of last week when the club activated an extra year option, has evolved into one of the Bantams’ primary attacking threats since breaking into the squad towards the end of last year.He has already scored seven goals in all competitions, including an absolute stunner against Rochdale in the FA Cup, and if all goes according to plan he hopes to reach double digits by season’s end.But as a team player, Wells always looks at the bigger picture rather than personal milestones. His ultimate goal for the season is to help City retain their League Two status. The Bantams are fresh off Saturday’s 2-1 home win over Oxford United that nearly saw Wells hit the target for the second game in succession. His goal-bound effort appeared to cross the line after taking a deflection. But the referee ruled otherwise.Still, Wells was more than satisfied with the outcome of the match that helped steer City further away from the relegation zone. The ex-Dandy Town striker now hopes his team can continue on in the same vein heading down the final stretch.“We need to take as many points as we can from now to the end of the season to take a bit of pressure off us,” Wells told The Royal Gazette. “Saturday’s three points was good so if we can get to that 50 mark then we shouldn’t have no problem.”Even though the current season isn’t over, Wells already has his sights on making the most of the 2012-13 campaign.“Obviously my first real year in (English) football I feel I have done well with what I have been given so the next year will solidify my future with the club hopefully,” he said.As for City’s decision to keep him on for another year, Wells said: “It’s good to have that coverage, although it’s only a year to be fair right now.”Obviously you always strive for an extended contract so you know your future is covered.”Wells appears to have settled in nicely at Coral Windows Stadium where he has earned the respect of his club’s supporters.“I am considered a favourite now and so I just have to keep my spot,” he said. “To come from the bottom of the order to the top in two or three months is a good achievement, obviously.“It’s just great to be playing week in and week out and scoring and hopefully I can keep the run going.“I am a quick learner and hopefully I can only get better and things will continue to fall in place.”
