Seeing the world through a different lens is a major goal of the Bermuda National Gallery’s Youth Camera Action (YCA) programme. The free photography programme for young people 11 to 14 years of age, offers instruction in the use of photographic equipment and in the examination of the familiar from a different perspective.The summer 2011 programme, sponsored by BTC, involved weekly visits to the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo (BAMZ). The visits provided an opportunity to practice and play with new camera skills while developing an appreciation for the natural world; the results of the visit, some of which are published here, will be on display at BAMZ in a series of rotating exhibitions throughout 2012.“Our organisations are looking for creative ways to get children and adults outdoors and involved in our natural environment,” noted Dr. Ian D. Walker, Principal Curator of BAMZ. “Through appreciation comes a sense of enjoyment and a need to preserve for future generations. Art photography is one method that we feel will help build appreciation.”Gallery director Lisa Howie agreed. “This collaboration between BAMZ and the BNG is a creative way to merge the art found in our natural environment and the art of photography,” she stated. “By using the environment as stimulus, young photographers are encouraged to have a greater appreciation for the delicate beauty in our world, while shaping their unique perspective through the camera lens. In this partnership, BAMZ and BNG have an opportunity to communicate their combined appreciation for youth participation in their education programmes, as well as provide a physical space for the public to appreciate the artwork created by our youth.”YCA continues through the school year, and the winter term will begin on January 28. Classes are held at the BNG on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school, on Saturday mornings and afternoons.The classes are sponsored by Catlin End-to-End Bermuda, who generously cover all costs, including instruction, equipment rental, photographic paper and field trip locations.
