Prowler given suspended sentence

A 26-year-old Pembroke man was given a suspended sentence for prowling outside a Devonshire woman’s home.Jamal Yusef Bascome pleaded guilty to one count of prowling in August, telling Magistrates’ Court that he was heavily intoxicated at the time, and only trying to spend the night at a friend’s house. The court had heard that at around 3.45am on August 3, police discovered the Sunset Pass resident lying on the ground near the complainant’s house. The complainant, Sarah Trott, told officers that Bascome arrived at her house while she was sleeping and began banging on the door, demanding to be let in.She said the repeatedly told him to leave before calling the police. Bascome told the court that he had been drinking in town and decided to spend the night at a friend’s house, and was unaware that the friend had moved.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner had ordered pre-sentencing reports at a prior hearing of the case. The court was told last week that Bascome did not make himself available to meet with court services so that the reports could be completed.Bascome appeared in court in police custody after failing to attend his previously scheduled sentencing.Mr Warner sentenced Bascome to six-months’ imprisonment, but suspended the sentence for 24 months.
