Former Attorney General Walter Maddocks dies after battle with cancer

Former Attorney General Walter Maddocks, QC, has died following a battle with cancer. He was 81-years-old.A well-established lawyer, Mr Maddocks served as Attorney General from 1991 to 1994.After retiring from the position, Mr Maddocks moved to Oxford, England. Lawyer Saul Froomkin said last night: “He was a charming, delightful, well educated man. He will be missed by his profession, I’m sure.”In addition to his time as a lawyer and Attorney General, Mr Maddocks was a Rotarian, serving as President of the Hamilton Rotary Club in 1973 and District Governor in 1976.He headed the Rotary International’s PolioPlus programme, which has been considered a major factor in establishing worldwide control of polio, from 1986 to 1988. Regarding the organisation’s involvement in the fight against polio, Mr Maddocks told Hamilton Rotary in 2001: “About three million children who might otherwise have been paralysed are running around playing safely.“The battle is not widely known, and I wanted to tell the people of Bermuda what good Rotary does in the world. I wanted the members of this club to be aware it has a tradition of service, and should be proud.”He is survived by his wife, Margaret, children Helen Gardner, Jane Vickers and Graham Maddocks, and many other family members.A memorial service will be held a at a date to be announced.
