A memorable night

August 10, 2011Dear Sir,The amphitheatre of the Southampton Princess Hotel came alive last Saturday night, with a dynamic showcase of an all Bermudian Musical Extravaganza produced by Verneil Simons. The show was a tribute of sorts, that highlighted the music of ‘Motown’, and ‘The Sounds of Philadelphia’, which was representative of the 70s and 80s era. Musical director Robert Edwards, commanded a fantastic band of dynamic local musicians, who superbly backed up each act with precision, and professionalism. There was standing room only, as Bermudians from all walks of life, came out to support their favourite local group, or soloist. Performing on stage were the veteran groups, and performers such as Spellbound, Elton Richardson, Stevie Darrell, Silhouette, Unique, McCartney Darrell, The UFonics, Candice Furbert, Vance Goater, Damon Simmons, and Jamie Zuill along with the background vocals of Cindy Smith, Chandra Maybury and Damon and Charo Hollis. The audience was very lively, and engaging as they cheered, and sang along with their favourite performers. The chief patron for the evening was none other than our very own Minister of Education, Dame Jennifer Smith, who presented scholarship to recipient Ms Furbert, who will study and pursue her music goals. The show ended after two and half hours of non-stop entertainment, with a grand finale with all of the participants, who came back on stage to sing ‘Aint No Stopping Us Now’, as the enthusiastic patrons slowly filed out singing along. This was truly a memorable night of great music.BOB S SMITHSouthampton
