A better alternative

July 2, 2011Dear Sir,With the recent news of cutbacks on school staff, I wonder how many people in the Department of Education have been relieved of their duties!I seem to remember back in the sixties, DJ Williams ran the Education Department with a quarter of the staff that is currently being employed, and if cuts are to be made, they should eliminate some of the bureaucracy and make the savings there.I believe it costs about $18,000 to educate a child in the public schools, and $80,000 to keep a prisoner in Westgate. Why cannot we make a savings in the prison costs by making the families of inmates pay for their keep? If a member of your family is going onto the wrong track, you will make sure they get back onto the straight and narrow, if you know you will be paying for their stay during Her Majesty's Pleasure. That's common sense!ANTONY SIESECity of Hamilt
