Yes to overseas jail

May 9, 2011Dear Sir,I would like to congratulate Wayne Perinchief on his brilliant idea of sending convicted criminals to jails abroad. I have voiced this idea before, but was told that overseas jails would not accept the idea, but I find this hard to believe as the price to tax payers here in Bermuda for housing an inmate is triple the costs in other jurisdictions. I also suspect that it is a feather in the cap for some of these hooligans to serve time in Westgate, and get together with all their chums to plot more gang related activities.I remember years ago a young offender pleading with the Magistrate not to send him to Westgate, as he knew that once inside, he would get back on drugs. This is just one of the ways in which Westgate fails as a correctional facility. This is a very small Island, and no matter how strict the prison rules are, there will always be many loopholes, and inmates will always have contact with the outside. Sending murderers and anyone found with a gun to prisons overseas is the only solution. It will certainly put a damper on gang-related activityThe sooner this great idea is implemented, the better.E RABENPaget
