Celebrate women

March 26, 2011Dear Sir,March, 2011 celebrated the contributions of women both locally and internationally. My mind is drawn to the many women who on a daily basis; turn the economic, social and political keys that ignite and deliver huge amounts of energy to our community function and lives.I’m further reminded of the many women balancing the multiple challenges of living in a more competitive and complex society. Shouldering immense responsibilities in financing family life including raising children (often alone). Managing and supporting marriage life/relationships and the work experience. Dedicating time and energy to church life, community service and sports. Women committed to achieving a rounded quality of life for family, community and themselves. The profound impact women bring to our community, whether in hospitality, education, the arts, government services, entrepreneurship, corporate life, retail, construction, communications, unions and so on; speaks to the breadth and depth of abilities and adaptability women share in diverse roles shaping Bermudas culture and stability. In celebrating the essence of women, numerous journals would need to be written (some have) showcasing the spirit, qualities and beauty of local women who have and continue to persevere in developing personal and community growth. At this time I bring no specific personality into focus, and there are numerous examples we are all aware of. Instead I’ve chosen to appreciate the entire spectrum of women without reference to names, profiles or status. Why? So I may extend the invitation which summons us “to value and encourage all women in their own power, talents and styles, as they live through their own stories”.As a community let us share our thanks and appreciation for the value of women and commend their contributions.Quote for March: “Seek freedom and become captive of your desires, seek discipline and find your liberty” Frank Herbert US scientist fiction novelist (1920-1986).What are your thoughts?LYNN MILLETTHamilton Parish
