Charities across the Island received $19,200 from the Argus Walk the Walk event this year.It was the second year the event has been held and raised twice the amount it did in 2010.The fundraiser allowed participants to choose the charity they want to support. Over 700 people registered for the walk on February 27 with money going to 87 locally registered charities.PALS received the most, $1,671, while the Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Trust and the Answering the Cry of the Poor charity received the second and third highest amounts.In addition, $5 from each entry fee went to support the Centre on Philanthropy’s website. The interactive website matches volunteers with charities.Jennifer Burland Adams, a manager at the Centre on Philanthropy, said: “The event empowers charities, from the smallest to the more well-known, to encourage their existing network of supporters, and perhaps even new advocates, to walk for them.“The increase in participants and the almost doubling of funds raised is a great example of how passionate and committed Bermudians are to their charities.”The Argus Group’s CEO, Alison Hill, said it was important to support charities during the current economic climate.“With less public funding available this year for many local charities, there has never been a more important time for Argus to provide support to the community in which it operates,” she added.l Related websites: www.volunteer.bm; www.argus.bm
