Socks and boxer shorts shop thief ends up in prison
A man who admitted stealing designer socks and underwear valued at $348 has been ordered to spend 30 days in prison.
Lamel Steede, 36, of Swans Bay Hill, in Pembroke, appeared in Magistrates' Court on Thursday after being caught trying to leave Gibbons Company with a shopping bag full of stolen items, including six packs of Tommy Hilfiger sports socks and 12 packs of white jockey shorts, on June 2.
Two weeks ago Steede appeared in court without legal representation and his case was adjourned until Thursday.
The court previously heard that a store security officer was monitoring cameras around 5.10 p.m. when they noticed a man looking at items on the shelf. The officer saw the man, Steede, with a 'Thank You' bag full of items, covered by a black jacket, and went to the floor to investigate.
The officer asked to see Steede's receipt, but he ran and shouted: "Are you following me?"
He continued running and told the officer he wasn't stealing because he hadn't left the store yet. To which the officer replied: "You're stealing because Gibbons doesn't have 'Thank You' bags."
Steede appeared in court still without legal representation, and apologised to Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner for wasting the court's time. He also asked the court to 'have mercy' on him.
Mr. Warner ordered Steede to serve 30 days in prison, starting from August 27, the day he first pleaded guilty.
