Scintillating SIms in contention

Michael Sims

Michael Sims fired a five-under 66 as he stormed up the leaderboard at the Stonebrea Classic in San Francisco yesterday.

The Bermudian hit three birdies and an eagle in a faultless display to finish in a tie for ninth after his second round.

Sims who is three-under par overall will make the cut for the second consecutive week on the Nationwide Tour.

While leader Matt Every, who is ten-under, appears out of sight, only two shots seperate Sims and third place.

An eagle at the long par-five seventh was the highlight of yesterday for Sims who at one stage looked like he may well self-destruct.

With bad light and poor weather delaying the end of Thursday's first round, Sims had to complete that yesterday morning. But after beginning the day in a tie for 13th, a terrible last three holes saw him tumble 23 places down the leaderboard.

Sims finished his first round bogey-par-double bogey and turned a possible one-under into a two over.

The rush to complete the second round helped Sims however, as it gave him little time to reflect on what might have been.

He started his second round on the 10th hole, birdied the 14th and fourth, before firing an eagle to get back under par.

A birdie at nine completed a scintillating final nine holes, which he shot in 32.

Sims is on something of a roll at the moment, he finished ninth in last week's Louisiana Open.
