League title may go down to wire
A two-horse race for the Premier Division 50 overs title between defending champions Young Men's Social Club and Belco Cup champions Southampton Rangers could go right down to the wire.
Social Club, who defeated nearest rivals Rangers by 79 runs in a crucial match on the road last weekend, presently top the pile with 20 points with Rangers four points adrift on 16 and this season's surprise package Police Recreation Club further back in third with 14 points, according to Bermuda Cricket Board's (BCB) official league standings.
Central Counties champions Social Club are currently in the driver's seat but the fate of their league title hopes is now out of their own hands as they must win their remaining two matches and then rely on Rangers ¿ who have two games in hand ¿ to drop precious points down the stretch.
The maximum amount of points both Social Club and Rangers can amass is 24 while the most Police and fourth-placed Cleveland –(12 pts) can obtain is 22.
In the event Social Club and Rangers finish level on points the league title will be decided on run rate, according to league regulations.
Social Club's remaining 50 overs fixtures are against a Cleveland County side who are now unbeaten in their last six matches and Eastern Counties champions St.David's (12 pts). Rangers still have to play Cleveland, Police and Somerset Cricket Club twice before closing out their 2008 campaign.
At the opposite end of the spectrum the battle to avoid relegation is just as close as only four-points separate bottom team Devonshire Recreation Club (two pts) from sixth-placed Somerset –(six pts) who have two games in hand.
Somerset have to play Police and Rangers twice in the remaining league fixtures while seventh-placed St.George's (two pts) meet Cleveland and Devonshire.
Devonshire, who have struggled this season in the absences of cousins Dean Stephens and Derrick Brangman, take on St.George's and St.David's in their final two matches of the season.
In the First Division race for promotion, PHC (18) currently top the pile by four- points over second-placed Willow Cuts (14 pts) ¿ who have three games in hand on the leaders ¿ and third placed Warwick who have 13 points.
With three rounds remaining in the Premier Division Open League schedule, St.George's (20 pts) currently lead second placed Rangers (12 pts) by eight- points with St.David's (10 pts) a further two points adrift in third.
PHC (20) are the current leaders in the First Division Open League over second placed Leg Trappers and third -placed Flatts who both have ten points.
