Police officers could smell marijuana as car overtook

A Sandys man admitted to possession of 2.93 grams of cannabis when he appeared yesterday in Magistrate's Court.

Kinole Simons, 28, of Albert Row, Malabar Road, was arrested after he overtook a Police car and was found with the drug.

The court heard from Crown counsel Cindy Clarke, that plain-clothed officers were travelling west on Middle Road in Southampton, near Port Royal fire station, on March 2.

A white Daihatsu car overtook the officers and a strong smell of marijuana came from the vehicle.

When officers made Simons, the driver of the car, pull over he appeared fidgety and nervous and his mouth was puffed up like he was hiding something in it.

Officers informed the 28-year-old he would be searched under the Misuse of Drugs Act. Simons then spat a brown substance to the ground.

During the search, officers found brown paper twists in his back pants pocket. He was arrested and taken to the Somerset Police Station.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner gave Simons a $1,000 fine.
