LONDON - Britain's top shares extended their winning streak to a sixth straight day to a one-month closing high, driven higher by energy stocks. The FTSE 100 ended up 20.1 points, or 0.39 percent, at 5,237.92, its highest closing level since May 18, notching up its longest winning run since September, having risen 15.69 points.

EUROPE - European shares rose for the sixth straight session, hitting a near five week closing high, as gains in the oil sector offset Nokia slumping after it issued a profit warning. The pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index of top shares closed up 0.2 percent at 1,039.25 points, its highest close since May 13. The index is still down around 6.6 percent from a mid-April peak on concerns about the euro zone debt crisis.

FRANKFURT - The DAX index ended at 6,190.91 points, up 15.86 or 0.26 percent.

PARIS - The CAC-40 index closed at 3,675.93 points, up 14.42 or 0.39 percent.

ZURICH - The Swiss market index closed at 6,490.07 points, up 5.34 or 0.08 percent.

MILAN - The FT IT All Share index closed at 21,114.94 points, down 18.08 or 0.09 percent.

TOKYO - The Nikkei average rose 1.81 percent to a one-month closing high as short-covering picked up and investors grew more confident about the global economy after successful debt sales by some of the weakest euro zone members. The benchmark Nikkei gained 179.26 points to 10,067.15, its highest close since mid-May.

HONG KONG - Hong Kong's financial markets were closed for a public holiday. Trading resumes tomorrow.

On Tuesday, the Hang Seng ended up 10.24 points at 20,062.15.

SYDNEY - Shares closed up more than 1.20 percent as investors piled into cyclicals and big miners rose on stronger metal prices but traders warned more market volatility was on the way. The S&P/ASX 200 index rose 54 points to close at 4,559.1.
