Crash driver was three times over the limit

A Sandys man agreed to a breath test to prove he was sober, but instead showed Police he was almost three times over the legal limit.

Haile Caines, 19, pleaded guilty to driving while impaired and crashing his car near Woodlawn Road. Crown counsel Robert Welling said just before midnight on August 31, Police responded to a report of a single vehicle accident in Sandys.

Caines was unable to provide a clear explanation about how the accident happened and he was asked for a breath sample.

Caines said: "OK. I'll do it to help my case. I'm not drunk, but I have been drinking."

The breath sample showed that Caines had 221 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 milligrams. Yesterday, Caines said: "I'm sorry for my actions. At this present point, I'm not drinking."

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined him $1,000 and banned him from driving all vehicles for one year.
