There's a new look in the House of Assembly after paintings of long dead Speakers were removed.

It comes after a recent marathon race debate, sparked by independent MP Wayne Furbert, who called for the removal from the House of Assembly of portraits of white leaders who presided over a racially segregated Bermuda.

Around half a dozen paintings have gone.

Mr. Furbert said: "I would like to thank the House and Grounds committee who supported my idea."

Still surviving are pictures from the modern parliamentary system, which began in 1968.

Mr. Furbert said he thought the removed pictures would be archived with discussions about what would take their place.

One idea is for a list of names of all the MPs who had ever served in Parliament.
