Beaches and Pompano Beach Club reported overall healthy April occupancy levels.

Chairman of the group, the Hon., Michael Winfield, attributed the success of the group to its commitment to quality and emphasis on upgrading facilities.

"Other hotels are into wholesale,'' he said. "We cater to the top end of the market which is more resistant to economic downturns and more loyal.'' He blamed the general downward trend on a US "post-recession hangover'' -- the effects of which were being felt not only by Bermuda but Europe and the Caribbean.

Pompano Beach Club general manager Mr. Tom Lamb claimed last month's BHA figures gave him no cause for concern.

"We're a little bit slower than usual but we're optimistic for the rest of the season,'' he said.

A poor winter last year caused an upsurge in 1994 spring visitors which was hard to match again this year, he said.

He added that airfare bargains last spring brought in additional business.

"Whenever the airline fares come down, we do better and we see extra business,'' he said.
