Logie hoping Hemp's form inspires others
Bermuda's seven-wicket loss to Kenya knocked the shine off a fine maiden ODI century from David Hemp.
And among those congratulating the ex-English County player was coach Gus Logie who hopes Hemp's sparkling form rubs off on others in the squad.
"Congratulations to David for reaching another milestone," he said. "Hopefully other players will get jealous and follow suit next game."
The ex-Glamorgan skipper is enjoying a new lease on life since being promoted to opener and has yet to be dismissed in two visits to the crease.
Over the weekend Hemp stroked an unbeaten 76 against Denmark and yesterday he went one better – albeit in a losing cause – with an unbeaten 102 off 152 balls in 211 minutes.
He hit nine boundaries and targeted left-arm spinner Hiren Varaiya who was carted for successive boundaries in his ninth over.
"I was obviously pleased but unfortunately it just wasn't to be our day today," Hemp said. "Kenya played well. They got in and got a good start and managed to keep scoring."
Hemp added 107 runs with fellow opener Fiqre Crockwell who chipped in with a dogged 45 off 89 balls, Bermuda's second century stand of the tournament so far.
"We laid quite a good foundation but we got bogged down when the spinners came on. The pitch was a bit damp and it made playing the spin quite difficult," he added.
"I thought the Kenyan spinners bowled quite well in the middle overs but batting did become a bit easier later on."
Hemp reached his half-century off 99 balls and took another 51 balls to post his record century that surpassed the previous highest individual tally (Irving Romaine 101) by a single run.
