Generous Rachel helps little Honduran girl

Rachel Daly, age 12, holds the thank you letter she recently received from her World Vision sponsored child, Yohana, who lives in Honduras.

A girl in Honduras now has a better life thanks to the generosity of a Bermudian girl and her friends. Rachel Daly asked the friends she invited to her 12th birthday party to bring the money they would have spent on birthday presents so it could be used to buy gifts for her World Vision sponsored child, Yohana. The money Rachel received from her friends (Julia Cooper, Kristen Cusumano, Annabella Doyle, Rosie Finnigan, Sophie Froud, Molly Pilgrim and Becky Whiley) was matched by Rachel's parents and, in turn, that total was again matched by the Ace Foundation through Ace's matching gifts programme, for a total of $710. World Vision said every single cent was spent on the gifts for Yohana, her family and community. Yohana received two pairs of pants, a blouse, a pair of shoes, two pairs of underpants, a twin bed and an electrical lamp. The rest of the money was used to help pay for improvements to the health centre in her community, for which 30 bags of cement, 1000 bricks, eight iron rods, and various other building supplies were purchased. World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organisation dedicated to helping children, families, and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice.
