St David's still have role to play in title decider
St.David's' chances of league glory have all but ended. However, the Eastern Counties champions could still play a key role in deciding which residence the coveted Premier Division championship takes up at the end of the season.
The Islanders host league leaders and defending champions Young Men's Social Club, who are now within striking distance of a second straight league title under the leadership of player/coach Charlie Marshall, today at Lords.
Victory over St.David's coupled with a Cleveland County win over Southampton Rangers at nearby Wellington Oval would be enough to land Social Club the title and spark more wild celebrations in the city.
However, Marshall's men could have a fight on their hands against an Islanders team who will be keen to clinch Belco Cup qualification.
As it stands, St.David's trail third placed Cleveland and fourth-placed Police ¿ who have a bye this weekend ¿ by two points.
At Wellington Oval, Rangers will be looking to keep their fading league title hopes alive in the absence of skipper Malachi Jones who is away in school.
Elsewhere, Devonshire are at home to St.George's in a match either team can afford to lose if they are to enhance their chances of Premier Division survival.
St.George's are presently level on points with Cup Match rivals Somerset who have two games in hand against Rangers.
Somerset have a bye this weekend.
Meanwhile, the race for league and promotion honours in the First Division looks set to go down to the wire with six teams still in with a mathematical chance of claiming the top prize.
Leaders PHC take on second placed Bailey's Bay in today's top billing at White Hill Field while third placed Willow Cuts should come away victorious in their game against seventh placed Flatts at Southampton Oval.
Western Stars, another team in with a shot at promotion, should have no problems against Somerset Bridge at St.John's Field.
Fifth and sixth placed Warwick and Leg Trappers have byes.
In Open League Premier Division action tomorrow, league leaders St.David's are away to Social Club at Devonshire Rec, second placed St.George's host Western Stars at Wellington Oval, Southampton Rangers are at home to Devonshire while the match up involving Willow Cuts and Bailey's Bay has been tentatively scheduled for St.John's Field.
