Cougars ready to bounce back with new boss
Devonshire Cougars defender Omar Butterfield is confident his side can bounce back from last season's disappointments and make a sustained run at all trophies available as they begin their quest for the Martonmere Cup against Boulevard Blazers at BAA Field on Saturday.
Cougars have recently appointed Devar Boyles as their new coach, and Butterfield who only managed to appear in a handful on games before injury caused him to sit out the majority of last season, believes that a change in management will be good for the side.
With the change though is an expectation that this year might see the return of some silverware to the club.
"The pre-season training has been nice for us," said Butterfield.
"It is a bit different this year but we are preparing really well for the upcoming season.
"We have a new coach in Devarr Boyles, a good coach and some structure which is something we have lacked a bit of in recent years.
"I only played five games last year and I have some personal goals as well, but our main priority is trophies.
Losing on spot kicks in last year's final was a bitter pill to swallow yet defender Omar Butterfield is confident this term will be much different from last.
Cougars led for the majority of the match before eventual champs PHC leveled matters at one apiece before winning on penalties had them win 5-3.
"Going into the Martonmere, we aren't really looking to start a revenge mission after our loss to Zebras last year. It's more of getting off on the right foot and getting everyone on the same page.
"The game will show what we have done in preseason, and we want to make sure we are ready for the every match we are in.
"Our attitude in every game is we want to compete and win, so that will be our mind set for Saturday.
The men from 'The Den' lost a few players over the summer while also bringing in a few to fill voids left by others. Losing striker Raymond Beach and midfielder Kori Goddard to Dandy Town was the main talk around the club, but Butterfield states that all is not lost with a few so-called big names leaving.
"The players we are losing aren't necessarily big losses, people move on for whatever reasons, some because we had a tough season last year. But the real men stayed behind to get things right this term and win our trophies back. We have gotten some key signings ourselves.
"I would say Sean Brangman was the best signing on the Island this off-season so we will be ok for the season and every competition we are in.
"We want to have a good season, and look to have success as the year goes on. With a bad season last year with injuries and key losses while we were still in the running, this year hopefully we can have our own bit of luck."
Cougars play Boulevard at 7 pm at BAA Field, followed by Dandy Town and Devonshire Colts.
