Cup is first step as Colts target trophies

Devonshire Colts skipper Aljame Zuill has vowed that this season will be different from last as his men take to the field to tackle Dandy Town at BAA Field tonight in the Martonmere Cup.

Their first match last term was a wake up call as Devonshire Cougars thumped them 5-0 in the curtain raising Charity Cup.

And with a new season comes fresh hopes of success, something that Zuill expects.

"Everyone has been putting in their time and working hard during the past few weeks," said Zuill.

"We still have Ray as our coach and with Keishon Smith in the fold we have another student of the game on the sidelines helping out.

"Our first couple of games we will take one at a time, but once the season kicks over we will be fine because we are looking to do something.

"All I can say and I'm hoping we can back this up, is that we are looking to be in contention for everything this season. And it starts from now.

"I'm the oldest guy on the team with a lot of younger guys, and they want a taste of the game. So I will get them to that point and let them show everyone what they have."

Colts had an up and down season last year, which included losing Zuill for a period of time. With the experience of last season's campaign something they can look back at, it will be interesting to see what exactly transpires from this season.

At one point it seemed that they would derail PHC's title hopes when they had them down 1-0 in the run-in to the league title before letting the wheels fall off and going down 2-1.

"It is not really about proving ourselves to the Island in response to last year were we started good and then let it slip away a bit," continued Zuill. "We are looking for structure right now, and get our game plan set for the season.

"Last year there was a point when everyone was scoring, so the mentality became laid back and everyone was looking for a goal.

"I am not an individual who strives on the individual accolades, so I am trying to instill that same discipline in my team.

"If you are looking for individual honours and things of that nature, you might as well go play tennis, because we are trying to build up team camaraderie and let our unity speak for itself.

"We will be working on the basics right now and move on from there, and make sure we don't fall short.

"Every game that is your starting point for a season it can be anybody's day, especially if it is a first for both sides as no one can predict what will happen.

"Look at how Zebras beat on Village, no one expected it to be like that. But just how they did it, they could turn around next week and take seven. So you can't be too loud right now. We will see how we look and make the necessary changes."

Preceding the Colts and Dandy Town match will be Devonshire Cougars renewing their acquaintances with former coach Andrew Bascome, who now patrols the Boulevard sideline.

Earlier in the week defender Omar Butterfield stated that nothing should be taken out of this game considering the timing of the match so early into the season. Nevertheless, the mentality is the same; go out and compete.

"Going into the Martonmere, we aren't really looking to start a revenge mission after our loss to Zebras last year. It's more of getting off on the right foot and getting everyone on the same page.

"The game will show what we have done in preseason, and we want to make sure we are ready for the every match we are in.

"Our attitude in every game is we want to compete and win, so that will be our mind set for Saturday."
