Two clubs get new place to call home

Boulevard Community Club and Young Men's Social Club have been given a new joint lease on Desert Field after the Government handed over four acres of land to the two clubs to erect a football field and buildings.

The news of the lease, which is evergreen, was handed down yesterday by Sports Minister El James, who along with assistant treasurer of Social Club, Troy Lewis, and Boulevard vice-president Albert Richardson, announced the plans for Desert Field.

Social Club currently use Bermard's Park as their home venue, while Boulevard occupy BAA field.

With both clubs gaining possession of the land across from the Victor Scott School, they can no longer ask for assistance in accommodating both their senior and youth programmes.

"It has been a long road and I must congratulate the two clubs on the field and I wish them luck as they put this vision in action," said James.

"Both of the clubs represent hundreds of members and we are excited as we see this being a ground for young people in these particular times, providing them with something positive to do.

"I hope they put this to good use, which I am sure they will and am anxiously waiting to see the fruits of their hard work."

Lewis' Bluebirds haven't owned a field of their own for decades, while Richardson's Boulevard have never owned one in their history.

And both clubs are ecstatic about the prospect of having a facility where their respective clubs can develop their youth and be an ever-present influence in the community.

"It has been a long road for Young Men's Social Club, we haven't had a field in almost 45 years so this will be a good start for many things to come for our club," said Lewis.

"It is nice to have the Ministry of Youth and Sport along with Works and Engineering helping us on this path to get us this property.

"We will erect some sort of building and also some class rooms where we can run our after school programmes and also have the kids do homework before training and so forth.

"It will not be a full-time club, only when we have activities will this be open for the players and kids we have in our youth systems. We think that we can be done between 12 and 18 months.

"The Government have done their part thus far in assisting in our search and we hope they will continue encouraging other clubs to be pro-active for the youth.

"We also have some construction sponsors along with our corporate sponsors Colonial Insurance, who have been on board for a few years now, so the future for our club is bright."

Richardson also commented on the announcement stating: "We have never had a field, and are looking forward to this. It is long overdue.

"We aren't trying to build a bar or nightclub down here, the Island has enough of those.

"We want this to be a community atmosphere where we can nurture the younger generation, while also inviting in the seniors to help and enjoy the environment as well."
