Belco union won't work overtime

Bermuda Electric Light Company (BELCO) cancelled a planned weekend of work as unionised crews said they were unavailable to work.

The previously scheduled maintenance, which was supposed to start yesterday in the Paget area, was cancelled by the Electricity Supply Trade Union (ESTU), which said they were unavailable to work.

The work had originally been scheduled in order not to disrupt businesses and a school in the area.

BELCO spokesperson Linda Smith said that ESTU representatives said they would not work overtime and that further questions should be directed to the union.

In a press release, she apologised for any inconvenience the change may have caused and said BELCO would advise well in advance when a new date could be arranged.

The Royal Gazette attempted to contact union media spokesmen Ray Bean and Robin Richardson. Neither could be reached by the time of print.
