A show featuring the work of some of the Island's best craftsmen and women has opened at Dockyard.

David Mitchell, one of the exhibitors and organisers of the Art of Craft show at the Bermuda Arts Centre at Dockyard, said: "It is wonderful that people still want hand-made items, because it is personal and it is a measure of somebody's life."

Mr. Mitchell said part of the reason that Bermuda Arts Centre at Dockyard was founded was because many people did not have a place to exhibit works that did not fit into the traditional mould.

"There was nowhere for craftsmen, graphic artists and commercial artists to exhibit.

"I think it is interesting that since the Arts Centre started it really has blossomed for everybody.

"There is a huge range of works being produced and being exhibited. It's been fascinating to watch and great to be a part of it.

"There were a lot of modernist artists coming back to the Island and they were having difficulty exhibiting. I think it sort of levelled the playing field and it started a discussion on what art is.

We are constantly seeing the work get better and better, and it is so nice to see.

"The buying public has to be there, because you can't produce it without an income."

The show remains up until April 23.
