Evans shatters school record
Bermuda athlete Aaron Evans set the track alight at the recent Rod MaCravy Invitational T&F Meet, shattering the University of Memphis 800-metre record.
Evans, 19, won his heat with a personal best time of 1minute, 50.8 seconds, setting a new indoor record for his school.
The time breaks his own junior record, which he set at the 2008 Carifta Games. He finished third overall and has a provisional qualification for the NCAA Indoor finals.
Track coach Kevin Robinson is pleased with Evans' performance at the meet and wants the youngster to continue his success for the rest of the season.
"He has been doing a great job for us here," said Robinson.
"He has embraced his new situation here, and it is already showing great results.
"I fully expect Aaron to continue to improve and run faster and faster times.
"He works with diligence, and is a pleasure to coach.
"My goals for Aaron this year are to win the Conference USA indoor and outdoor titles, and earn a chance to run at the NCAA Championships for us. He seems to be on pace to do that.
"He is a great competitor, and his refusal to lose is irreplaceable.
"Aaron is a great student and a tremendous talent.
"He will do great things in track and field, not only for The University of Memphis, but for his home country of Bermuda."
Evans is no stranger to competing at international level, having been a 800m finalist in the 2005 Carifta Games, competing in the most recent Carifta championships in Trinidad and Tobago and reaching the semi-finals of the World Youth Championships in 2007.
