In RG: Coping with diabetes
look at combatting the disease that affects a staggering one in nine of all adult Bermudians.
Most diabetics in Bermuda -- about 90 percent -- have type 2 diabetes. Unlike type 1 diabetes, which requires patients to take insulin to survive, type 2 diabetes can be managed. By eating sensibly, exercising and cutting out smoking, long-term risk can be reduced dramatically.
RG senior writer John Burchall looks at how two Bermudians are managing their disease while dietitian Kathryn Chapman offers some practical tips about lifestyle management for diabetics.
RG Magazine is available free only with tomorrow's edition of The Royal Gazette .
Also on the health front, Bermuda this month hosts an international conference on deafness. RG profiles Jennifer Jeffers Grant, who is herself hearing impaired and works in Bermuda's public schools system, helping children with hearing difficulties.
