A Pembroke man who refused to pay the correct bus fare was fined $1,200 for using offensive words, possession of drugs and assaulting a Police officer when he appeared in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Tekle Zion Mallory, 21, of No.33 Government Gate, pleaded guilty to offensive behaviour and resisting arrest on April 26.

Crown counsel Cindy Clarke told the court that around 10.55 a.m., Police attended the bus terminal on Washington Street to assist in a disturbance on a bus.

Police were told that Mallory had put in a fare of $2 instead of the correct fare of $4.

When he was told by the driver that he needed more money, Mallory went into a rage.

Mallory demanded that he be reimbursed for the $2 he had paid.

"I'm not getting off this f**king bus!'' he said.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner heard that passengers were transferred from the bus to another one for fear of Mallory's temper.

Mallory continued to rage and when officers attempted to arrest him, he struck and kicked at the officers and injured one, causing bruises.

Mallory was subdued, handcuffed and taken to Hamilton Police Station.

When he was searched, he was found to be in possession of one yellow twist in his sock.

He was asked what it was and replied to officers: "It's weed.'' It was analysed by the Government analyst and found to be 0.86 grammes of cannabis.

Mr. Warner asked Mallory to explain his actions.

Mallory replied: "The day I got on the bus, I put $2 in and normally I get away with it. It was $2, but I wanted it back. I usually pay that and get away with it.'' Mr. Warner said: "Well this time you didn't get away with it. I fine you $400 for possession of drugs, $400 for offensive behaviour and $400 for resisting arrest.'' All the fines were to be paid forthwith or Mallory faced 120 days in prison.
