Chaka Khan, Sanborn top Jazzscape bill
Jazzscape moves to the Royal Naval Dockyard this year and will feature the David Sanborn Group and Chaka Khan.
But also appearing on stage will be local talent, said Stephen Wagner, the president of Integrated Lifestyles Marketing Group Inc., which is producing the five-day event.
Meanwhile, the Department of Tourism is pumping about $800,000 into the event through direct and indirect advertising and promotional work, said Tourism Minister David Dodwell.
Mr. Wagner said Jazzscape is requesting demo tapes from local entertainers who feel they can add something to the event and one or two local bands will be selected to help with promoting the event in the US.
And he said he was looking into setting up the Bermuda Youth Jazz All Stars over the summer with the help of the Island's schools and music schools with the plan of debuting them on the opening night of Jazzscape.
Mr. Wagner said the use of Dockyard as a core home would help the event realise its full potential with the addition of local food, art and crafts and musical entertainers.
"The West End Development Co. will present the food, arts and crafts portion of the festival and will work closely with Bermuda Jazzscape to co-ordinate the integration of local talent into the festival,'' said Jazzscape spokeswoman Risa Feldman.
The event kicks off on October 8 with a party on Front Street in conjunction with Harbour Nights. It then moves to St. George's on the following night where there will be dancing in King's Square as the event pays tribute to the swing era.
Dockyard then hosts the event on Friday night and all day Saturday and Sunday.
On Friday, Nancy Wilson and the David Sanborn Group headline, while on Saturday, New York Voices, Arturo Sandoval and Chaka Khan take centre stage.
Sunday sees Dockyard host a gospel brunch revival.
After the three day festival people will not be left wanting more, promised Mr. Wagner. "Their plates will be full.'' Admission will be charged for Friday and Saturday's events while the other three days will be free.
